The town is named for Judge Charles Lander Cleveland who donated the land for the city to the Houston East & West Texas Railway for use as a stop. For the donation of land, he requested the town be named for him. In their second album (released in 1969) The Band released a tune entitled “Look Out Cleveland” about the Texas town.
